Melwood Farm is quieter this week. We lost our ram, Jasper.
For a small seedstock flock, a ram is never just another animal. Jasper was the other half of our breeding program—the match for the 35 purebred St. Croix ewes we know by name and habit. His job was to put the next generation on the ground. He did that job well.
We will remember him most clearly through his lambs. They performed well: vigorous at birth, sound as they grew, and the kind of offspring that make you trust a sire. On a farm that sells breeding stock, that matters. Buyers do not just take our word for a ram. They look at what he leaves behind. Jasper left behind lambs we were proud to raise and proud to offer.
St. Croix sheep reward that kind of honesty. The system is simple on purpose. Grass, rest, and animals that can thrive without a high-input setup. Jasper fit that place. He was part of the daily rhythm on Melwood Farm.
Losing him leaves a gap in the breeding paddock and in the plan for the year. A nucleus flock this size feels every absence. We will choose the next ram carefully, because the ewes—and the reputation of the seedstock we sell—depend on it.
For now, we are grateful for the lambs already on the ground. They are Jasper’s best record. They are how his work continues at Melwood Farm.
